Flow Meter Plastic Body Selection: Choosing PVC, PVDF, and PEEK for Chemical Compatibility

Quick Answer: PVC body flow meters suit cold water, weak acids, weak alkalis, and many salt solutions below 60 °C. PVDF body meters handle strong acids, solvents, and higher temperatures up to 100 °C. PEEK body meters are reserved for aggressive fluids, high temperature, high pressure, or high purity service where polymer cost is justified. Silver Automation Instruments is a flow meter manufacturer and supplier for chemical process lines in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Australia, and Africa. We supply plastic body electromagnetic flow meters, oval gear meters, and ultrasonic meters. In practice, PVC is selected for over half of all water and wastewater plastic body flow meter orders we process. But when the fluid is aggressive, the body material decision controls the whole meter lifetime.

Why Plastic Body Material Matters

Metal flow meter bodies fail quickly in many process streams. Hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, and seawater all attack stainless steel. A plastic body meter avoids most metallic corrosion. The body material is only one part of the wetted path. You also need to check the liner, electrodes, seals, and bearings. But the body is the first decision for chemical service.

Most engineers skip this part. They check the chemical chart only once, then later the seal or liner fails. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A water treatment plant in Vietnam replaced a stainless steel electromagnetic flow meter every nine months. The fluid was 10% hydrochloric acid at 30 °C. After switching to a PVC body meter with PTFE liner, the meter lasted five years without maintenance. The initial price was lower than the stainless version.

PVC Flow Meter Bodies: Low Cost for Water and Weak Chemicals

PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. It is the cheapest plastic body option. PVC is easy to machine, easy to solvent weld, and easy to source. We use PVC bodies for electromagnetic flow meters from DN15 to DN300. Typical pressure rating is 10 bar at 20 °C. At 50 °C, derate the pressure and check the flange tolerances.

PVC works well with cold water, wastewater, weak acids, weak alkalis, and oxidizing solutions. Common applications include swimming pool dosing, desalination plant seawater flow meters, and cooling water with chlorine. On one site in Australia, a customer used PVC electromagnetic flow meters on 12% sodium hypochlorite lines for disinfection. The meters ran for years with no body attack. The EPDM seals and titanium electrodes were selected to match the same chemical.

Do not choose PVC when the fluid is above 60 °C. Do not choose PVC with strong solvents like toluene, xylene, or acetone. Those fluids soften PVC and cause swelling. Do not use PVC with concentrated nitric acid or fuming sulfuric acid. The body will degrade quickly. In that case, move to PVDF or PEEK.

PVDF Flow Meter Bodies: Workhorse for Acids and Solvents

PVDF stands for polyvinylidene fluoride. It offers a strong balance between chemical resistance and price. PVDF is harder than PVC and handles higher temperature. A standard PVDF body meter works from -40 °C to 100 °C continuous. Short excursions to 120 °C are possible if the pressure is low and the gasket material is right.

PVDF resists mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorine solutions, and many organic solvents. It is the common choice for 30% to 60% sulfuric acid, 20% hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid up to 80 °C. In a fertilizer plant in the Middle East, Silver Instruments supplied PVDF body electromagnetic flow meters for 40% sulfuric acid at 65 °C. The pipeline was DN50. Output was 4-20 mA HART to the plant DCS. The meters have run without body replacement for over three years.

PVDF has limits. Strong ketones, fuming sulfuric acid, and molten alkaline metals will attack it. Acetone can soften PVDF at higher temperature. Some polar solvents can cause stress cracking in injection molded bodies. If your fluid is a solvent blend, send us the solvent list and percentage by weight. We check against our PVDF compatibility table and advise if a PEEK body is safer.

PEEK Flow Meter Bodies: High Purity and Aggressive Service

PEEK stands for polyether ether ketone. It is a high performance engineering polymer. PEEK body flow meters handle high temperature, high pressure, and aggressive chemicals in one compact unit. Silver Instruments offers PEEK body options mainly for small line sizes from DN4 to DN50. The material cost is high, so larger diameters become expensive.

PEEK is compatible with most acids, bases, alcohols, and aromatic solvents. It holds up in steam service, high purity water, and pharmaceutical clean in place cycles. We have supplied PEEK body oval gear flow meters for ink dosing in Southeast Asia. The fluid contained methyl ethyl ketone at 50 °C. PVC was not an option. PVDF softened after two weeks

. PEEK solved the issue and maintained accuracy within 0.5% of reading.

PEEK is not universal. Avoid concentrated sulfuric acid above 90% at high temperature. Avoid strong oxidizing halogens at elevated temperature. The polymer can be attacked by some chlorinated solvents under pressure. In most cases, the high cost of PEEK is justified only when PVDF cannot survive or the process needs zero metal ion release.

Chemical Compatibility Comparison: PVC vs PVDF vs PEEK

Use this as a starting reference. Always share your full process data with Silver Instruments before you buy.

PVC body flow meters suit water, seawater, 10% sodium hypochlorite, 10% hydrochloric acid, 20% sulfuric acid at 25 °C, and most weak alkaline solutions. Maximum continuous service is 60 °C. PVC is not suitable for aromatics, ketones, strong oxidizers, or concentrated acids at high temperature.

PVDF body flow meters suit 30% to 60% sulfuric acid, 20% hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, salt solutions, and many organic solvents. Maximum continuous service is 100 °C at reduced pressure. PVDF is not suitable for acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, fuming sulfuric acid, or high pH molten alkalis.

PEEK body flow meters suit aggressive organics, steam, high purity water, dilute acids, and high pressure small line service. Continuous service can reach 200 °C for selected grades. PEEK is not suitable for concentrated sulfuric acid above 90% at high temperature or strong oxidizing halogens.

Matching Plastic Body to Flow Meter Type

Electromagnetic flow meters benefit most from plastic bodies. The wetted body can be PVC or PVDF. The liner is PFA or PTFE. The electrodes are titanium, Hastelloy, tantalum, or platinum. For hydrochloric acid, use tantalum electrodes and PVDF body. For sodium hypochlorite, use titanium electrodes and PVC or PVDF body. For ultrapure water, use PEEK body with PFA liner and platinum electrodes. Most electromagnetic flow meters need a minimum conductivity of 5 µS/cm.

Oval gear flow meters with plastic bodies are used for chemical dosing. PVC and PVDF are common for low viscosity acids. PEEK bodies are used for solvents and ink. Always check the bearing material. PEEK gears with PTFE bearings work well for many chemical transfer applications. For viscosity above 5 cP, oval gear meters hold tight accuracy well.

Ultrasonic flow meters with plastic transducers can use PVDF or PEEK for wetted sensor housings. These are often clamp on meters, so the fluid does not touch the sensor. For inline plastic body ultrasonic meters, the same chemical compatibility rules apply.

Installation and Pressure Drop Factors

Plastic body meters weigh less than metal meters. They are easier to install in skids and small pipe racks. But plastic bodies flex more than steel. Use proper pipe supports. Do not let the meter carry pipe weight. Flange bolts should be torqued in a star pattern to the value from the manual. Over tightening is a common cause of cracked PVC flanges.

Pressure drop is mainly set by the flow tube diameter and the process flow range. A DN50 electromagnetic flow meter with a PVDF body has almost no pressure drop because it is full bore. An oval gear meter adds pressure drop due to the gears. For dosing pumps, keep the pressure drop below 0.3 bar at the maximum flow rate to protect the pump.

FAQ

Which plastic body is best for 20% hydrochloric acid?

PVDF is the safest standard choice. PVC works at low temperature and low concentration only. For 20% hydrochloric acid up to 60 °C, use PVDF body with PTFE liner and tantalum electrodes. For higher temperature, consider PEEK.

Can PVC flow meters handle sodium hypochlorite dosing?

Yes. PVC handles 10% to 12% sodium hypochlorite at ambient temperature. Use an electromagnetic flow meter with PVC body, PTFE or EPDM liner, and titanium electrodes. Do not use stainless steel in the same line.

What is the maximum temperature for PVDF flow meter bodies?

PVDF works up to 100 °C continuous. At 120 °C, the pressure rating drops and the body may creep. Check the flange rating and use metal backing rings if needed.

Why is PEEK so expensive compared to PVC or PVDF?

PEEK raw material costs more and machining is slower. PEEK is typically used for DN4 to DN50 meters where its chemical and temperature performance is required. For large lines, a PVDF body with PTFE liner is often the better investment.
