Krohne Mag Meters and Krohne Electromagnetic Flow Meters: Optiflux Series Chemical Elements
Quick Answer: Krohne electromagnetic flow meters in the Optiflux series work well for acids, caustic and water-based chemical streams when the liner and electrode materials match the chemical elements in the fluid. For a reliable quote, send Silver Instruments your pipe size, flow range, chemical name, concentration and temperature. We supply compatible DN15 to DN300 mag meters with 4-20 mA HART output.
Optiflux Series Overview for Chemical Service
Here is the thing. Krohne mag meters in the Optiflux series include the Optiflux 1000, 2000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 models. Many chemical plants in Vietnam, Thailand and the Middle East use the Optiflux 6000 or 6300 C on dosing lines, reactor feed pipes and wastewater discharge. In practice the model number matters less than two things. First, the liner must resist swelling. Second, the electrode elements must not corrode in the fluid. Silver Instruments often replaces older Krohne electromagnetic flow meters with equivalent process connections and the same sensor material stack.
Chemical Elements and Liner Selection
Chemical compatibility starts with the chemical elements and the compound in your stream. PTFE and PFA liners handle sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide and many solvents. EPDM is common for cooling water, potable water and weak caustic. Hard rubber liners are budget options for non-oxidizing slurries. The temperature limit for PTFE and PFA liners on a mag meter is usually 120 °C to 150 °C depending on flange rating. For sulfuric acid at 98 percent and 35 °C, a PTFE liner with tantalum electrodes is a common specification. For 20 percent hydrochloric acid at 25 °C, PFA liner with Hastelloy C-276 electrodes works on most sites. Because chemical compatibility changes with concentration and temperature, do not copy a material list from another plant without checking your exact concentration.
Electrode Elements for Krohne Mag Meters
Most engineers skip this part. Electrode material selection is where many quotations go wrong. Standard 316L stainless steel is fine for water, weak caustic and some food products. Hastelloy C-276 contains nickel, chromium and molybdenum and handles many reducing and oxidizing acids. Tantalum works in concentrated sulfuric acid but fails in alkaline media. Platinum is used for strong oxidizing acids and some bleaching liquors. For seawater and desalination brine, 316L or Hastelloy C electrodes with PTFE liner cover most pumping and discharge lines up to 60 °C. Silver Instruments has supplied 4-20 mA HART mag meters for a desalination plant in Oman where the customer specified DN150 PTFE liner and Hastelloy C electrodes for sodium hypochlorite dosing.
Typical Flow Range and Output Signals
For chemical skids, the pipe size is often small. DN15 to DN50 mag meters cover 0.1 to 10 m3/h on dosing pumps and pilot plants. DN80 to DN150 covers reactor transfer and utility headers. DN200 to DN300 handles plant discharge and cooling water mains. Output options on Krohne Optiflux compatible meters include 4-20 mA, pulse, RS485 Modbus and HART. Accuracy on a standard electromagnetic flow meter is around 0.5 percent of reading from 0.3 to 12 m/s flow velocity. Silver Instruments recommends a minimum conductivity of 5 µS/cm for water-based fluids. Demineralized water with conductivity below 1 µS/cm is not a good mag meter application. For fluids below 50 cP viscosity, standard calibration works. If you need mass flow in kg/h, we can scale the 4-20 mA output using a fixed density value. Some chemical skids also wire a PT100 temperature sensor into the same loop.
